'Music of France'

Join us for a soupçon of French sacred and secular music ranging from the 13th through 17th centuries. Selections include ‘Alle psallite cum luya’ (Anonymous, 13th century), Kyrie from ‘La Messe de Nostre Dame’ (Guillaume de Machaut, c.1304 – 1377), ‘O bone Jesu’ (Loyset Compere, c.1445 – 1518), and chansons by Claudin de Sermisey, Claude le Jeune, Antoine de Févin, and Jean Mouton.

Camerata California Program - May 6, 2007 (PDF)

The program includes several selections from ‘Le Roman de Fauvel,’ 14th century verses set to music by Philippe de Vitry in the Ars Nova style. The tale of Fauvel (a donkey or ass) is filled with allegory and political satire mocking both church and state. The donkey's name, which when broken down forms fau-vel, or "veiled lie", also forms an acrostic in which each letter stands for a deadly sin: Flaterie (Flattery), Avarice (Greed), Vilanie (Guile), Variété (Inconstancy), Envie (Envy), and Lacheté (Cowardice).

Camerata members will sing and perform on recorders, crumhorns, cornamuse, shawm, rauschpfeife, rankett, sackbut, viola da gamba, psaltery, crotales (chimes), and percussion.

This is Camerata California's eighth appearance on the St. Luke's Church Evensong Concert Series.
